Historical Notes

Charles Harris, a self-taught composer and banjo player, wrote "After the Ball" in Milwaukee. It became the most successful song of the time. In 1892 it sold over two million copies of sheet music, and the song's success encouraged publishers to restrict their catalogs to popular music, effectively launching the modern American popular music business. The song's total sheet music sales exceed five million copies, making it the best seller in Tin Pan Alley's history.
