Historical Notes

On St. Patrick's Day 1899, the Windsor Hotel located at Fifth Avenue and Forty-Sixth Street in New York caught fire while people were gathered to watch the parade. The fire may have started after someone tried to throw a match out of window; the wind blew it match back against the lace curtains. The hotel was destroyed within 90 minutes leaving nearly 90 dead (although estimates vary).
