Historical Notes

This cover to “The Sister of Rosie O’Grady” includes a shot of Mabel Normand (1892 – 1930), an early film actress, screenwriter, producer, and director.

Mabel Normand’s mother had Irish ancestry and her father was French Canadian. Early in life she worked as an artist’s model, including for Charles Dana Gibson who created the Gibson Girl image. Her film career began in 1909; by 1912 she was staring alongside Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Oliver Hardy, and Stan Laurel. Normand was Chaplin’s leading lady, mentor, co-writer, and co-director in a string of films.

Her personal life was embroiled in celebrity scandal, including being a murder suspect in the death of Paramount director William Desmond Taylor in 1922. Bad publicity from her chauffeur’s killing of millionaire Courtland Dines ended her career in 1923. Normand’s health declined, and she died of tuberculosis in 1930.
