Black and White Lithography (1800s)

Prior to 1900 the majority of sheet music was published in black and white lithograph engravings or scrollwork. Simple, black and white scroll work dominated the designs. The United States began catching up with European sheet music designs after the Civil War, eventually offering illustrated covers to promote sales.
