The struggle for an independent Ireland, from the 1803 Rebellion of Robert Emmet through the Irish War of Independence in the 1920s, inspired a number of songs written and published in the United States from the mid-1800s to the early decades of the 1900s.

The pieces in this gallery are just a sample of the music that we have identified as having some Scottish connection, from early Scottish ballads to Tin Pan Alley era songs.
Sir Harry Lauder (1870 – 1950) was an internationally recognized Scottish entertainer. He toured the world during his career, composed many of his own songs, and appeared in three films.
Alfred Concanen (1835 - 1886) was a leading lithographer of the Victorian era, best known for his elaborately illustrated sheet music covers. His covers often featured illustrations of the popular music hall performers of the times or scenes from the songs themselves.
George M. Cohan, the great American song and dance man, spent 56 of his 64 years on the stage. He became, as one of his songs would proclaim, "The Man Who Owned Broadway." He acted in over 1000 performances and wrote over 500 songs, many of which became major national hits.
The Irish experience during World War I (1914-1918) was complex, and the variety of Irish and Irish American themes in popular sheet music of the era reflects this complexity. These themes include romantic songs, songs honoring military units, patriotic songs, and songs reflecting Irish politics of the time.
