Historical Notes
Dolly Varden may refer to a character by the same name in Charles Dickens' novel Barnaby Rudge (published 1840). It was also a type of costume, inspired by Dickens' character, considered fashionable around 1870. It typically included a brightly patterned dress with a polonaise overskirt gathered up and draped over a separate underskirt and a flat straw hat decorated with ribbons and bows. This attire is featured in Concanen's lithograph.
