Historical Notes
Original Civil War handbill published in approximately 1861, containing a song dedicated to 1st Lieutenant Charles J. Murphy by his friend, Thomas Kean. Murphy was the Regimental Quartermaster of the 38th New York at the Battle of Bull Run. He was awarded Medal of Honor for remaining behind to help the wounded and subsequently escaping Libby Prison. The song consists of four eight-line stanzas celebrating the loyalty and dedication of the Irish immigrants in the Union, in the air of "St. Patrick's Day".
