Historical Notes

Fire Department ballad published between 1855 and 1860 about Lady Washington Engine Co. (Bronx, NY) hand-drawn pumper wagon No. 40 titled "The White Ghost". Fire companies competed in contests, leading to hard fights over hydrants, as well as the race to the fire itself by hand-drawn wagons. The ballad consists of six eight-line stanzas to be sung to the air of "Flaming O'Flannigans".
