Historical Notes

Picture of Terence MacSwiney (Mayor of Cork, last name misspelled as McSwiney) on the cover. In 1920, Terence Joseph MacSwiney (1879 - 1920) was elected as Lord Mayor of Cork during the Irish War of Independence. The British arrested him on charges of sedition and imprisoned him in England. MacSwiney died in October of 1920 after 74 days on hunger strike, bringing international attention to the Irish struggle.
